CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

THE TALK

TORI

Nestled into a ball on my side, each agonizing pulse resonated like the relentless beat of a drum, amplifying the torment that coursed through me. That pain was more extensive because of the shard of glass that had pierced my scalp. “Fuck,” I muttered.

His large hand squeezed my breast at the same time I felt his dick stab my spine. A smile lifted at the corners of my lips. This was nice. It felt like a dream. Was I dreaming? The ultimate bad boy who said he couldn’t be with me was holding my body in his arms like I belonged to him. And only him. It was safe to say he and I were both in denial. We wanted more, but knew it couldn’t happen. He lived on the East Coast, and I lived in the Midwest.

But I could get used to this.

You’re delusional, Tori. You can’t be with Ritchie. Remember, your boyfriend is blackmailing you to stay in a fictitious relationship so he can fuck your cousin in the privacy of the home the three of you share.

Last night, I remembered waking up around eight. My hand slipped across the cold empty spot at my side. Where was Ritchie?

I heard the hotel door open and close.

“Hello?” I called out.

Ritchie stalked into the room, gripping several yellow shopping bags. The name of one of my favorite places, Lemon Boutique, was scrawled across the bags.

“Are you all right?” His eyes held worry and genuine concern. The man liked me a lot. Ritchie didn’t want to admit it out loud. I didn’t think he’d know how to handle falling for a mess of a woman like me. I was truly broken and damaged. I couldn’t be fixed. He spoke about not ever marrying or having kids. He and I were in the same boat. I wouldn’t ever get married or have children. It was fine. I’d made my peace with my reality.

What would Ritchie and I do when it came time for him to return to New Jersey for good? Tears burned the backs of my eyes, but I wouldn’t let them break free.

“My head feels like someone took a frying pan and knocked me upside the head several times.”

“Well, wife, take the medication the doctor prescribed.” He gestured with the bags toward the nightstand. I couldn’t believe he hacked my medical records and added himself as my husband.

That was why he and Daryl fought.

I didn’t learn about it until the nurse came into my room with the wheelchair ready to wheel me down to the front entrance. She said my husband was at the nurse’s station handling the paperwork.

Ritchie was truly a crafty man.

“What’s in the bags?” I asked as I reached for the pills.

He shrugged. “Clothes and lingerie.”

I tossed two pills into my mouth and chased them with a glass of water.

“Thank you, Ritchie.”

He placed the sea of bags at the foot of the bed.

“It’s probably best I take the clothes to the playhouse,” I stated.

His eyes darkened.
